Plaça Major

The Plaça Major is the nerve centre of the town of Sa Pobla. Until the end of the 19th century there were two squares separated by a block of nine small houses in the middle: the "des Vaumar" square and the "sa Quartera" square. The town hall building, also known as "Quartera", was built on top of the latter square. In the past, it was the house where cereals and vegetables were kept and sold. Later, the back part of the town hall would be called "plaça de la Constitució".

The progressive growth of the population, especially after the drying up of s'Albufera (1862-1871) and the arrival of the train, boosted the Sunday market and caused the two old squares to become too small. In July 1887, the construction of the current Plaça Major was agreed upon, with Joan Serra i Caimari as mayor. The works were carried out gradually and were completed in 1897. In 1914, the current plane trees were planted. The first catafalque was inaugurated in 1910. The current catafalque dates from 1931-32. The last renovation of the Plaza Mayor was carried out in 1991.

Local authors. History and literature:
All the "poblers"(gentilicio of the inhabitants of sa Pobla), almost as one of our signs of identity, keep, among other intimate values, a personal vision of our Plaza, our Plaza Mayor. In essence, for each one of us, it is a sum of perceptions. The golden leaves in autumn captivate me.

Retalls de la Memòria. By Alexandre Ballester (1933-2011); playwright, writer, chronicler of the town and discoverer of Albopàs.
