Can Planes (antic casal dels Verdal)
Former home of the Verdal family. In 1874 the building was already under construction. In 1894 the heiress of the house was Margalida Serra i Morei (a) Verdal, married to Miquel Planes i Poquet. After their son - Ignacio - the house became known as Can Planes. Ignasi Planes, head of the Conservatives and mayor of Sa Pobla between 1914-1915, provincial deputy between 1921-1924. The Planes family was one of the richest in the town.
In 1972 the building was acquired by the Town Council "pobler" when Rafel Serra (a) Tianet was mayor. It was used as a museum of ethnology, local history and municipal archives. When it was refurbished in 1988, it became the Museum of Contemporary Art. Since then, it has become a space dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of art. Today it also houses the Museum of Saint Anthony and the Devil.
Local authors. History and literature:
Old family, with a house in sa Plaça, Can Verdal and notable landowners in the Marjal poblera. They had properties in Son Bonafús, Son Ciurana, Son Vent, Son Cebrià. They boosted the progress of the estates through the implementation of poor gas engines, Otto and Reig brand. Apart from farming, they were also involved in banking. Their enterprising spirit was manifested in the foundation of the Banco de la Puebla (1922-1943), bought by Banco Español de Crédito S.A.
The family lineage had a notable political weight in the conservative party: Guillermo Serra Llinás, royal mayor (1798); Andreu Serra i Serra, trustee of part of La Montaña (1825) appointed by Ferdinand VII for a term of 3 years; Juan Serra Serra (a) Verdal, mayor in 1887 and 1889; Miguel Planes i Poquet, lawyer and mayor (1904-1906) and Ignasi Planes i Serra (1914-1915). Concerned about the welfare of the town, the reorganisation of the square, the cemetery, they worked together with the Local Health Board and in the defence of the town's interests, together with Miquel Socias i Caymari of the liberal party, with whom they maintained a strong political struggle.
It is worth mentioning the two emblematic buildings of the family, today owned by the municipality: Can Verdal, used for social services and elderly people, and the Can Planes Museum, the nerve centre of "poblera" culture.
