Plaça des Mercat

On the 3rd of January 1892, Mayor Antoni Palou i Pons inaugurated this square, initially and for almost a century destined for the sale and purchase of livestock used in agricultural work. In the fifties of the 20th century, phytosanitary inspection of potatoes destined for export began to be carried out, mainly for the English market.

It is currently remodelled and used for recreation and for holding Sunday markets and fairs. There is a sculpture by Antoni Caimari, called "Bestia" (Beast), which was donated to the town of Sa Pobla in 1996.

Local authors. History and literature:
During the civil war the prisoners who formed the forced labour battalions were housed in open premises or warehouses. In the case of Sa Pobla, in 1938, "Can Garroví" was set up in the Plaça Mercat. This battalion was to build the railway works between sa Pobla and Alcúdia. That space was not habitable, the latrines were a hole in the middle of the market.

Es Mercat square was surrounded by wire and heavily guarded by soldiers. We had a concentration camp in sa Pobla.
